Tonsil Stones Information
Have you experienced unexplained pain in your throat? Bothered with some level of discomfort but cannot find the reason or the cause of the pain? You might be suffering from tonsil stones. These stones, formally known as tonsilloliths grow in the throat area. These pebble like formations are lodged in the crevices along the throat walls, most especially near the tonsils.
As their name suggests, tonsil stones are hard, small and calcified formations that are actually composed of minerals like magnesium and phosphorous. The stones do not offer any health hazard as they are. But, especially enlarged stones can cause discomfort to the patient.
Symptoms of Tonsillolith Growth
Tonsil stones are usually hidden among the folds, curves and crevices of your throat wall. Although some are visible, most are almost undetectable. They do not cause any pain and are usually taken for granted. Aside from the level of discomfort that large stones cause, the only tell-tale sign of tonsil stones is the seemingly incurable case of halitosis or bad breath.
Halitosis is commonly known as the socially scorned bad breath. The usual connotation to someone who is suffering halitosis is the lack of proper personal hygiene. This is partially true.
Halitosis is indeed caused by bacteria buildup in the mouth and in the throat. High levels of bacteria can lead to the build up of sulfuric compounds that provide foul smelling fumes coming from the mouth.
Studies have concluded that the same bacteria responsible for the sulfuric compound build up are also the same bacteria that cause the growth of the tonsil stones, which is also a root cause of halitosis.
Another symptom that can signify the presence of tonsil stones is inflammation or swelling in the throat, most specifically on the throat tissues. Hard, stone-like growths like tonsilloliths can expand the throat, and can be seen as swelling or inflammation.
A healthy throat should be smooth and clear of any formation or sticking mass. If you notice pebbly and white mass stuck around your throat area, you should consult an ENT doctor for a proper throat check up and consultation. ENT doctors specialize on ears, nose and throat disorders. They are the best people to deal with your tonsil stones.
Another unlikely symptom of tonsil stones formation is ear ache or sudden pain in the ears. The nerves near the throat and those that connect to the ears transmit the pain signals. The sensitive nerves in distressed throat muscles will pass on pain to its neighboring nerves and tissues.
Removal of Tonsil Stones
While some will say the best way to have your tonsil stones removed is by going to the professionals, you can also remove the stones yourself. Use a mirror to locate the stones, and then with a clean instrument, gently poke to dislodge the stone. You can expect mild pain or discomfort during the removal of the tonsil stones.
